This semester has been like no other. Part of that can be attributed to the current pandemic. The other part can be attributed to joining the McNair program. Since joining the McNair program, I have begun to look at graduate and law schools in a more serious manner. This program provides a great set of resources that help foster an environment that encourages you to continue your education and organize the process of applying to graduate schools. There has been a great deal of overlap in my academics, clubs, and research recently. Two of my classes this semester have been specifically focused on the Constitution and the rights that are granted to citizens. I am also the president of the Pre-Law Club at the university, and an event we hosted overlapped with my research as well.As a club we coordinated four law school representatives to come in and speak to prospective law students over Zoom. There were a couple universities in attendance that caught my eye and I looked into them further.
One of the universities was the University of Saint Thomas. The individual that represented the university carried himself in a way that was very appealing. He also talked about the requirements that they had for graduation and potential internships. Currently, this law school is one that I am considering quite heavily. I cannot say for sure that it is the front runner, but the representative did a great job at getting me interested in their law school.
Another law school that was in attendance was Marquette. They are a school that I have considered since I became interested in law. This was primarily because if you graduate from a law school in Wisconsin, you do not need to take the Bar Exam if you practice in Wisconsin, making my pathway to practicing law quicker. I would not normally consider a private school because the cost is much more than a public school, but the representative said there were obtainable options to receive financial assistance.
The final law school I am considering is University of Wisconsin-Madison. There were a couple reasons for my interest in this law school. Growing up in Wisconsin, I have always wanted to go to the university I watched them play football on every Saturday. As I began looking at their law school more in depth, it started to grow on me. Like Marquette, you can avoid taking the Bar Exam if you plan to practice law in Wisconsin, so that puts them on the same playing field. Another thing that interested me was the Law School Expo I went to in Madison my freshman year. The energy of this university's law school appealed to me and their mock lecture was really interesting which helped push them into my top three law school choices.
